Today, we’re going to be discussing Herniated Disc Treatments.  In order to understand the different treatment methods for this condition, we first have to understand what the spinal discs are and what a herniated disc is.

Herniated Disc Treatments:  Functions of the Discs

The spinal discs are located between each set of vertebrae (spinal bones), and they are really important because they serve two functions that are very important in order for you to be healthy.

First of all, they act as cushions or shock-absorbers so the bones don’t absorb the force of normal movements, which would cause pain.  The discs end up absorbing the shock and protect the bones in this way.  The second function is that they are a special type of ligament, holding the bones together.

If you take a closer look at the disc, you will see that it is made up of two parts:  the Annulus Fibrosus and the Nucleus Pulposus.

The Annulus is a strong outer covering, and the Nucleus is a softer, jelly-like center.  The nucleus is incredibly important, because this is where the disc will store oxygen and nutrients for proper health.

Herniated Disc Treatments:  What is a Herniated Disc?

Now, let’s talk about what a herniated disc is, so that the treatments we will be discussing will make sense.

In the case of a herniated disc, the outer covering of the disc (the Annulus) has torn, and the soft jelly center (the Nucleus) is starting to push through the outer covering.  This can happen due to an injury, or even normal wear and tear to your spine over a period of time.

When this occurs, a bulge will develop in the outer covering of the disc due to the weakness.

One interesting fact about the disc that you may not be aware of is that the disc itself does not feel pain sensations.  The discs are specifically designed not to feel sensation, simply because of their function – because they are absorbing shock all day, you would be in pain constantly if they were designed to feel pain.

Now, that may not make sense to you because, if you’re living with this problem, you know that it can be very painful.  So, where does the pain come from if this is true?

The reason it can be so painful is because the disc usually applies pressure to the spinal nerves when it herniates.

The nerves are very sensitive, and they control everything in the body.  So, if there is pressure on a nerve because of the disc herniation, it will cause a lot of pain and other symptoms as well.

In addition to the pressure on the nerve, the body will also go through a process called inflammation.  In this case, the body will send additional blood to the area in an attempt to heal the problem.  However, this causes additional swelling and heat, which just agravates the nerve even more.

So, what are the typical Herniated Disc Treatments that are available?

Unfortunately, many of the treatments available for this condition are not very effective.  For example, most doctors will start by prescribing medications (pain-killers and muscle-relaxers).  These are only effective about 30% of the time, and if you’ve used these before, you know that when you stop taking them the pain usually will return because you’re not getting to the source of the problem.

Injections such as cortisone or epidurals are effective about 50% of the time, but once again, the pain usually returns once they wear off.

Physical therapy is a great option, but it also is only effective about 50% of the time if it isn’t combined with other treatments.

Finally, surgery is the last resort because it has the lowest success rate of all (approximately 16%).  This is why you will rarely find a doctor who will recommend surgery unless everything else has been tried first.

Why is this true?  Most treatments will only focus on the agravated nerve – they will focus on reducing the inflammation and pain, but they do absolutely nothing to correct the source of the problem, which is the injured disc itself.

Of course, if you don’t correct the cause, the pain will return because all you’re doing is patching it up – you’re not correcting it.

My goal is to help you heal the disc itself so the pain doesn’t continue to return.  So, if you are interested in learning more about the most effective Herniated Disc Treatments that will not only alleviate the nerve pain, but also heal the disc, please click the following link (Herniated Disc Treatments).
